Like you said, the characters aren’t exactly in the most glamorous jobs. That’s sort of where it came from.īD: When Kelly’s character is talking, there’s a strong emphasis – even in the tagline for the poster – on the emphasis of our country’s current economic state. Then they find themselves in this larger than life situation and we look at how they handle that. So I thought that would be an interesting way to get these people with these mediocre jobs who don’t have that much ambition but aren’t quite apathetic. When I was selling jeans, I somehow found myself in a ghost story that’s kind of crazy.

I’ve had crappy jobs where you’re just stuck there all day and I wanted to make a charming movie about that. West: House Of The Devil was about this girl who’s broke and bummed out. What made you gravitate towards that? It’s quite a departure from your usual style.

The characters kind of know what’s going on, but they spend most of the time speculating and trying to get concrete evidence.

It actually reminded me of The Hole, where all the characters are extremely innocent and it has this kind of whimsical vibe. You shouldn’t have characters that belong in a horror movie, they should just find themselves in the situation.īD: The way you set up the comedy makes the film feel a lot lighter than you tend to usually go. This isn’t that movie.’ I think that’s what makes that effect the contrast of the non-horror stuff. You’re like `Hey, what’s that? She’s not supposed to have a big cut on her head. Then when something happens… Like, I remember one part when Sara falls down the stairs and you see a cut on your head. It’s like, who cares? Then you’re just there to see the special effects which, when making a low-budget movie, is not what I’m really after.īut if you do get to spend 30 minutes with these people, hanging out and laughing, you feel like you get to know them. I don’t think horror is successful until you really get to spend time with the characters in the movie because if something bad happens to them, they’re just the people in the movie. But, I think slow-burn is just a way of saying `How come there’s not much more horror in the beginning?’ That, for me, is my own personal taste. I really thought this movie had regular sort of pacing, because there’s a lot of humor in it. When people say slow-burn about this one, I think `Again with the slow-burn!’ I don’t think I’m really aware of it, it’s just my style. What drove you to create this kind of style for yourself? What attracts you to the slow-burn? Fanboy bloodlust may not be sated here, but the patient will be rewarded. One of the most anticipated films of the SXSW Film Festival was Ti West’s latest slow-burn horror, The Innkeepers, which is being compared to his previous entry, The House of the Devil.Ībout the last two staffers (Sara Paxton and Pat Healy) of a haunted hotel that’s going out of business, Bloody Disgusting’s David Harley caught up with West to talk about what people are saying is one of the scariest films of the year.ĭark Sky Films will release later this year.ĭavid Harley: There are a lot of similarities between House Of The Devil and The Innkeepers in terms of pacing and plot and action beats. He twists expectations by remixing clichéd genre staples with genuine individuality. The film channels ghosts of movies past, including The Legend of Hell House and Polanski’s The Tenant, however West’s film remains distinctive, if at times confusing and ambiguous. But each gesture chips away at character definition, making their later peril so much more troubling.

We are served idle chit-chat and everyday mundanity, allowing the slow burn to almost extinguish. What elevates this above the average scary movie is that West seems more influenced by mumblecore than horror. Their slacking off is interspersed with paranormal investigation into the inn’s dark legend. A simple plot involves two employees tasked with overseeing a haunted hotel and its smattering of oddball guests. Now director Ti West adds to the genre with his curious shocker The Innkeepers. Our primal fear of haunted houses is fertile ground for the horror devotees, but it’s been well farmed over the years.
